“Well. Don’t mess with the perfection that you serve! Two naive Okies walked into this establishment and were blown away by the awesome food, ambiance(the music..cool touch!), and kindness of the workers. Naive no more…we will be back! My food choices were “Lou’s Way” with a side of delectable cole slaw. My hubby ordered the “Mailman” with a side of yummy baked beans. We Okies aren’t dummies. Learning the correct way to eat was found. Paradise found!” —Susan U.
“Wow what a cool place! It’s obviously been updated to that modern retro look but it’s nice and clean. Oh and yes the food is outstanding! Be prepared to order twice because you just have to try something else. The staff was helpful in guiding me to the crowd favorite choices and I was very pleased. Loved the Fedora and Lou’s way dogs and the Brisket is super tasty and huge! There are about 10 or so bar stools so if you come when its slammed be prepared to not have a seat or get it to go. But come before or after the lunch rush and you should be fine. Oh and don’t forget to take about 30 napkins, these dogs get messy! This is a new fav in Wilmington! Charlie you da man!” —Andy B.
Tucked into the Food Lion Center, just past Snow’s Cut Bridge lies “hot dog heaven”. Charlie Griangers has opened in Carolina Beach to customer raves.
It’s no wonder folks crave these gourmet hot dogs. Charlie Graingers offers 20 combinations of hot dog topping combinations, with names like the Jamaican, Queen Street, the Stetson and The Mailman. Or you can mix and match to include what you like.
In addition to these tasty hot dogs, Charlie Graingers has tender, melt in your mouth house roasted beef brisket, served in a bun like the dogs, accompanied by pickled okra. There’s also pulled pork shoulder, turkey and even pimento cheese. For a true Southern Treat, try the gumbo!

The Charlie Graingers’ story began in 1939 by Mr. Charlie and Mrs. Anne Grainger. Charlie Grainger was an accomplished musician traveling all over the country by train in his private railcar. He played the finest and most sought out venues across America playing Big Band and jazz sounds to packed orchestra houses. He met his wife Anne and set his sights on Wilmington, NC to start a new way of life. Settling on Queen Street he opened the “Peacock Alley” restaurant and became the first drive-in in Wilmington, NC. The Grainger’s retired in the 1980’s leaving a long legacy of hot dogs and stories behind. Many generations, young and old, fondly remember the smell and taste of the original Peacock Alley and it’s lasting memories made over the decades.
Owner, Louis North purchased the site of the Original Peacock Alley in 2012. He demolished the too far dilapidated and condemned buildings and decided to rebuild. The new Peacock Alley opened in 2013, serving the same world-class hot dogs and southern cooking as the Original. In 2015, the name was changed to Charlie Graingers to honor the legendary founder. Charlie Graingers is positioned and built on the exact location as the original. Our Carolina Beach location will surely please. Not exactly the same drive-in service as yesteryear, Charlie Graingers does offer plenty of free parking and Curb-Side- Pick upon request.
